Australian POW's endured poor living conditions in regards to hygiene which the tropical environment caused heavy rain fall which resulted in shoes and clothes becoming rotted as well as the latrines to become over filled
causing it to pour into nearby rivers and creeks which weer used for a source of water, from this cholera was prominent disease .malaria also took a toll over the prisoners .
Due to the fact that the pow;s were provided with limited food in caused a lack of vitamins supplements from this many POW's were malnourished .The POW's survived of rice,meat,vegetables,tea ,milk and flour .most of the POW's suffered from disease as most of the food was rotten as packaged meat was often covered by maggots
the cattle used was commonly diseased and malnourished.
As a lack of nutrients diseases such as beriberi infected POW's .Beriberi is a disease which causes water to bloat up in single part of the body which caused extreme pain .To prevent the disease prisoners chewed on native plants believed to have vitamin B , another disease that was common was dysentery many POW's placed charcoal to counteract dysentery in which had properties to comfort digestive pain.small cuts lead to infections as a result of having limited medical supplies .gangrene therefore was a problem prisoners would often place maggots onto the rotting flesh to remove the flesh as others would stand in the creek for fish to chew of the rotting flesh.tropical diseases often resulted to nausea,vomiting,headaches,diarrhea,ulcers and skin sores.The POW's faced many diseases and struggled to find food in extreme cases the POW's ate any form of protein such as domestic animals the POW's faced many struggles while under imprisonment.
