At any one time, in a prisoner of war camp, there could be hundreds of captives. This led to a thin layer of monetary help, ergo a whole camp filled with emaciated young men. This artistic interpretation (see exhibit) of a POW camp is aimed at displaying the unhygienic, grotesque environment that the Australian casualties were subjected to. The dark colours and overall darkened environment is indicative of the incredulous atmosphere of the camps. Most camps were in hot, muggy forests making for incredibly hot days and disconsolate nights. The soldiers were at constant risk of torture or execution. The use of 'examples' was a successful ploy aimed subduing rowdy prisoners.
